While building a template in xential|studio, the Word ribbon may stop responding. This happens because Microsoft Word has lost focus. This article describes the cause and several work-arounds to restore the focus.

Cause

Microsoft Word can only hold focus on one document at a time and does not always recognise that a second document has been opened embedded in xential|studio. As a result, the ribbon stops responding to clicks. This is a known issue that cannot be resolved from within xential.

Step-by-step guide

Below are three work-arounds. Try them in this order, or choose the method that best suits your template.

1
Add an empty group question. Place an empty group question in the template. Then open its contents via Open content (right-click). Word will then recognise that the focus must move to the new document. Afterwards, return to where you were and open the content there as well to restore the focus to the correct location.
2
Save the template. Click the disk icon to save the template. This sometimes restores the focus. The method is not always reliable, but it is quick to try.
3
Use an existing selection or group question. If your template already contains a selection question or group question, open the answers via Open content and then return to where you were.

Tip

You can activate Open content more quickly with a shortcut: place your cursor on an answer or group question and press Enter. This has the same effect as selecting Open content via the right-click menu.
