The Normal.dotm file is the default template for Microsoft Word (from version 2007 onwards). This template is automatically opened when you start Word and contains the default styles and settings that define the basic appearance of a document, such as font, margins and line spacing.


Where to find Normal.dotm

The file is located on your computer in the following folder:

C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

Make sure hidden files and folders are visible in Windows Explorer, otherwise this folder will not be shown.


Step-by-step guide: creating a backup before making changes

Before modifying Normal.dotm, it is advisable to create a backup first. This way you can always return to the original settings.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates.

Select the file Normal.dotm and copy it using Ctrl + C.

Paste the file into the same folder using Ctrl + V. The copied file is automatically renamed to Normal - Copy.dotm.

Important

Any changes you make to Normal.dotm will be applied to all documents you open afterwards. The next time you start Word, the modified version of Normal.dotm will automatically be used.
